Firestone's refueling station for natural gas vehicles to open on Friday

June 26, 2012. Weld County's first public compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station for vehicles that operate on CNG is to open in Firestone on Friday.

Mansfield Energy's SkyBlu CNG station, located at the Shell Station at 11099 E. Interstate 25 Frontage Road, exit 420 — the interchange of I-25 and Colorado Highway 119 — will be opened formally with a ribbon-cutting, speeches and fueling demonstrations, and a showcase of CNG-fueled vehicles, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

It's the first of four public CNG stations scheduled to open in Weld County this year.

Speakers at Friday's event are to include Weld County Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer, Firestone Mayor Chad Auer, Alex Schroeder from the Colorado Energy Office, and Mansfield Energy Corp. president J. Alexander.

“This is a milestone for the Weld County Natural Gas Coalition,” Kirkmeyer said in a statement. She said the station is a step on the way of achieving the county commissioners' goal of creating an alternative fuel corridor between Colorado and Wyoming.

Auer said the fueling station “is a step toward expanded use of clean energy, opening foreign and domestic markets, improving Colorado's economy and loweing our dependence on foreign oil.”
